Having an accurate assessment and diagnosis of ADHD or autism is the first step toward accessing support. Being able to understand a person’s unique developmental profile assists with their own self-awareness and leads to better coping. An accurate diagnosis can foster acceptance, support and improved communication with families, friends, educators and healthcare professionals. Our ADHD and ASD assessments in Melbourne are tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual, providing a thorough understanding of their challenges and strengths.
Our awareness of neurodivergence is expanding and, for many adults, signs of ADHD or autism may have gone unrecognised or been covered up. Others may have been diagnosed with other conditions like social anxiety, depression, OCD or BPD. It is common for undiagnosed adults to have heard negative comments as children…things like being called ‘lazy’, ‘too emotional’, ‘weird’ or told that they’re ‘not trying hard enough’.
Our understanding and awareness of neurodiversity is growing. Some adults are starting to recognise traits of neurodivergence through greater awareness and some only consider the possibility for themselves after a child has gone through an ADHD or ASD assessment and they notice similarities in their own traits, behaviours, or feelings and those observed in the child.
Why seek a diagnosis?
Most adults report that a diagnosis offered a sense of relief in finally understanding why they have always felt ‘different’ or always struggling. Changing the messages they might have heard as a child (e.g. being ‘lazy’) to create a narrative around self-understanding and self-compassion can also be hugely therapeutic. An accurate diagnosis is also necessary to tailor the appropriate supports and improve wellbeing.
